Internet

Internet is mostly used way of communication in modern era. It is a global network connecting millions of computers. More than 100 countries are linked into exchanges of data, news and opinions. It is a "network of networks" that consists of millions of smaller domestic, academic, business, and government networks, which together carry various information and services, such as electronic mail, online chat, file transfer, and the interlinked Web pages and other documents of the World Wide Web. Internet Access Today internet is widely used all over the world. It is estimated that about 60 million host computers on the Internet today serve about 200 million users in over 200 countries and territories. Today's telephone system is still much larger: about 3 billion people around the world now talk on almost 950 million telephone lines (about 250 million of which are actually radio-based cell phones). But by the end of the year 2000, the authors estimate there will be at least 300 million Internet users. Also, the total numbers of host computers and users have been growing at about 33% every six months since 1988 - or roughly 80% per year. The telephone service, in comparison, grows an average of about 5-10% per year.

Internet connecting the world The Internet emerged in the U.S. engineering research community between 1969 and 1983, an outgrowth of the marriage between computing and communications technologies. Australian computing researchers had less advanced but cost-effective mechanisms in place at the time, and adopted the Internet protocols only when they had reached a level of maturity. Rapid progress was made from 1989 onwards. In the first quarter of 2003, it was estimated that 75% of Australians 16 years and over had access to the Internet. Online time per user per month averaged 10 hours over 18 sessions. The number of households connected to the Internet grew rapidly between 1998 and 2002. In 1998, about 1.1 million households (16%) had access to the Internet.1 By 2002 this figure had risen to almost 3.5 million (46% of households). The growth in the number of households connected to the Internet is, as would be expected, reflected in the number of adults accessing the Internet at home. Interconnected Networks In 2002, adults were more likely to access the Internet at home than anywhere else.1 In 2002, 98% of households connected to the Internet used a computer for access. Between 1998 and 2002, households' access to computers increased, though not as strongly as their access to the Internet. In 1998, just over 3 million households had access to a home computer (44% of households), and 37% of these households were connected to the Internet. By 2002, 4.6 million households (61%) could access a home computer, and three-quarters of them were connected to the Internet. In 2002, the Internet was accessed daily in 37% of households with access to the Internet, with access at least once a week in 91% of such households.

Spending on communication more generally has grown: real household final consumption expenditure on communication more than doubled (in chain volume terms) between 1994-95 and 2002-03 to stand at more than $12 billion In 2004-05, 67% of Australian households had access to a computer at home and 56% had home Internet access. The growth in household access to computers over recent years has been significantly lower than the growth in household home Internet access. During 2004-05, whilst the proportion of households with access to the Internet increased by 3 percentage points, in the same period, the proportion of households with access to computers increased by only 1 percentage point.

In Australia the major telephone company Telstra owns the majority of the infrastructure and is the main provider of DSL at 1.5 Mbit/s. Competitors resell this, and some provide other options - such as their own DSL networks over Telstra copper wiring with speeds up to 24 Mbit/s, a cable network at 10 Mbit/s, business fibre in city centres, and various wireless choices. The Internet is still grrd.
